The power industry is moving towards a new and greener direction.
Under the guidance of the "Four Revolutions, One Cooperation" new energy security strategy and the "Dual Carbon" goal, China's energy transition has been advancing rapidly, and the power industry has achieved a quantitative leap and qualitative improvement, injecting strong impetus into the high-quality development of the economy and society.
The power supply guarantee is solid and powerful, and the power structure is moving towards new and green. By the end of 2025, the national power generation capacity reached 3.89 billion kilowatts, a significant increase of 76.4% compared to 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 12.0%. The combined installed capacity of wind power and solar power reached 1.84 billion kilowatts, accounting for 47.3% of the total installed capacity, surpassing thermal power for the first time and becoming the largest power source in the power system. The national power generation increased from 7.78 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2020 to 10.58 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2025, with the combined power generation of wind and photovoltaic power reaching approximately 2.3 trillion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 21.8% from 9.4% in 2020. The proportion of thermal power generation decreased from 68.5% in 2020 to 59.8% in 2025, marking a new stage in the structural transformation of the power system under the leadership of the "Dual Carbon" goal. The strong growth in installed capacity and power generation has driven the improvement of industry efficiency. In 2024, the total revenue of规模以上 power production and supply enterprises reached 9.7 trillion yuan, and profits reached 0.65 trillion yuan, increasing by 46% and 58% respectively compared to 2020. The continuous growth in installed capacity and power generation has demonstrated the responsibility of the power industry, promoting the comprehensive improvement of energy supply guarantee capabilities through its own high-quality development.
Electricity consumption has steadily and stably increased, and the electricity consumption structure has continued to optimize. With the rapid development of the economy in China, the total electricity consumption from 2020 to 2025 increased from 7.52 trillion kilowatt-hours to 10.37 trillion kilowatt-hours, exceeding the 10 trillion kilowatt-hour mark. From the perspective of electricity consumption structure, the electricity consumption of the secondary industry was 6.64 trillion kilowatt-hours, accounting for 64%, showing a slow downward trend compared to 2020, reflecting the effectiveness of industrial transformation and energy utilization efficiency improvement. The electricity consumption of the tertiary industry grew rapidly, reaching nearly 2 trillion kilowatt-hours in 2025, accounting for over 19%, increasing by 3 percentage points compared to 2020, becoming the main driving force for electricity growth. The electricity consumption of urban and rural residents has steadily increased, accounting for over 15% in 2025, reflecting the continuous upgrading of residents' consumption and the sustained improvement of the level of people's livelihood security.
Electricity resource allocation has been continuously deepened, and the power system has become more efficient. Facing the basic national condition of the inverse distribution of energy resources and load centers, China has built a new resource allocation pattern of "West-to-East Power Transmission, North-to-South Power Supply" through the construction of ultra-high voltage transmission channels. As resource-rich regions, Inner Mongolia's power generation reached 851.7 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025, ranking first in the country, with thermal power generation of 592 billion kilowatt-hours and wind power generation of 203.3 billion kilowatt-hours, both ranking first in the country, solar power generation of 51.2 billion kilowatt-hours, ranking second in the country, and the external transmission volume exceeded 180 billion kilowatt-hours, with 90 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity. This has fully demonstrated the role of large energy bases. As the main load center, Guangdong's power generation reached 709.5 billion kilowatt-hours in 2025, ranking second in the country, with thermal power and nuclear power playing important roles, generating 504.2 billion kilowatt-hours and 126.8 billion kilowatt-hours respectively, accounting for nearly 90% of the total, and combined with external power, a diversified and reliable power supply system has been formed, effectively supporting the high-quality development of regional economic and social development.
Looking forward, with the continuous improvement of China's economy, it is expected that electricity demand will continue to maintain a stable and steady growth, the electricity consumption structure will continue to upgrade, the green and low-carbon transformation of the power system will accelerate, and the new power system will provide strong power guarantees for the construction of Chinese-style modernization.
